Learning Area Requirements

For effective learning in Grade 7 Mathematics, learners are expected to:

  • Have basic mathematical tools: ruler, pencil, geometry set, graph book, calculator (where allowed).

  • Participate actively in class discussions, problem-solving activities, and group work.

  • Practice regularly through exercises, quizzes, and assignments.

  • Apply mathematical concepts in real-life situations, such as budgeting, measurements, and data recording.

  • Demonstrate accuracy, persistence, and logical reasoning when solving problems.

Teachers are expected to provide opportunities for practical application, inquiry-based learning, and technology integration where possible.

Learning Area Description

Mathematics at Grade 7 introduces learners to foundational concepts in algebra, geometry, measurement, statistics, and number operations. It builds on primary school mathematics and prepares learners for advanced mathematics in upper secondary.

The learning area emphasizes:

  • Understanding numbers and operations (fractions, decimals, integers, percentages).

  • Measurement and geometry (perimeter, area, volume, angles, shapes, constructions).

  • Algebraic thinking (expressions, simple equations, patterns).

  • Data handling and probability (collecting, organizing, and interpreting data).

  • Mathematics in daily life (financial literacy, ratios, time, and problem solving).

Mathematics develops critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills, aligning with the Competency-Based Education's (CBE) vision of producing learners who can apply knowledge in real-life contexts.

Learning Area Outcomes

By the end of Grade 7 Mathematics, the learner should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of numbers, operations, measurements, algebra, geometry, and data handling.

  2. Apply mathematical skills in solving real-life problems such as budgeting, measurement, time management, and basic financial decisions.

  3. Develop logical reasoning and problem-solving skills by working through tasks individually and in groups.

  4. Communicate mathematical ideas clearly using symbols, diagrams, graphs, and words.

  5. Use tools and technology (e.g., calculators, geometry sets, digital platforms) to support problem solving.

  6. Demonstrate accuracy, persistence, and confidence when handling mathematical challenges.

  7. Show appreciation of mathematics as a useful subject for careers, science, and everyday life.

1 Geometry - Measuring Angles - Video
N/A

Video Overview The video is an educational resource aimed at children, focused on the topic of angles. It teaches how to name different types of angles and how to measure angles. Common angle types are introduced (e.g. acute, right, obtuse, straight) along with visual examples. Key Learning Points Definition of an Angle The video explains what an angle is — how two lines meet at a point called the vertex. Angle Types by Size It shows the various categories of angles, such as: Acute (less than 90°) Right (exactly 90°) Obtuse (more than 90° but less than 180°) Straight (exactly 180°) Using a Protractor The video demonstrates (or likely demonstrates) how to use a protractor to measure angles: placing the center on the vertex, aligning the baseline, reading the appropriate scale. Visual and Practical Examples It uses diagrams, animations or real-life contexts to show angles in various forms — making the content kid-friendly and visually engaging. Reinforcement Through Practice There are probably sample angles that viewers are asked to look at and determine their type, encouraging active engagement.
